How many fingers am I holding up?

Home » How many fingers am I holding up?

I typically intend to ease myself into a particular topic with some kind of introductory or basic/essential post regarding a normative – yet questioning – commentary. Along those lines, I haven’t yet posted much with regards to the “Liberty & Freedom” category thus far . . . realizing it is a far more challenging arena for indoctrinated “normies” and therefore saving it for later. Yet, I find myself not able to wait to share this brief post.

I realize that for most people, anything outside of what they’re taught in grade school, high school and university is considered non-intellectual/conspiracy-speak. I hope that my dear reader can set that aside for a time and consider the noted item below. I feel an immediate need to share the following.

I’ve read George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty Four” (1984) novel several times, and also watched the 1980s video numerous times over the last 20 years (with John Hurt & Richard Burton). I finished watching it again this evening, and I noted something rather interesting.

Perhaps the most definitive exchange from the entire film is the scene where Richard Burton’s character (O’Brien) is interrogating John Hurt’s character (Winston Smith). The following quotes are from the film.

[O’Brien]  Do you remember writing in your diary:  “Freedom is the freedom to say two plus two equals four.”?

[Winston]  “Yes”

[O’Brien]  “How many fingers am I holding up?”  [holding up four fingers]

[Winston]  “Four”

[O’Brien]  “If the Party says there are not four, but five, then how many?”

[Winston]  “Five”

[O’Brien engages a torture device on Winston who screams in pain.]

[O’Brien]  “No. That’s no use. You’re lying. How many fingers please?”

[Winston]  “Four. What else could I say? Five, or anything you like. Will you please stop it? Stop the pain.”

[Short scene cut. O’Brien holds Winston cradled in his arms.]

[Winston]  “How can I help it?  How can i help what I see in front of my eyes? Two and two makes four.”

[O’Brien]  “Sometimes Winston, sometimes they are five, sometimes they are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once. Neither the past, nor the present, nor the future exists in its own right. Reality is in the human mind not in the individual mind which makes mistakes and soon perishes, but in the mind of the Party which is collective and immortal. Again.”

[Winston]  “No”  [Torture machine is engaged and Winston yells in pain]

[O’Brien]  “How many fingers Winston?”

[Winston]  “Four. I suppose there are four. I tried to see five. I wish I could.”

[O’Brien]  “Which do you wish? To persuade me that you can see five, or to really see them?”

[Winston]  “Really to see them.”

[O’Brien]  “Again”   [Torture machine engaged and Winston yells in pain.]

[O’Brien]  “How many Winston?”

[Winston]  “I don’t know. I don’t know.”

[O’Brien]  “Better.”   [torture machine is disengaged]

He is tortured because of his assurance in objective reality – – in confidently sharing what he physically sees. The Party does not want anyone relying upon or professing anything with regards to objective reality. THEY want to define reality as they wish . . . on a whim . . . and with complete disregard to what actually is real.

I found myself this evening looking for various images from the movie to print and hang on the walls of my office for the visceral effect of making note of the idiocy of “Big Brother” and “Ministry Of Truth” authoritarian rule.

Unfortunately, Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty Four” novel seems to have become an operations manual for today’s government approach to totalitarian rule – worldwide. I was able to successfully find “Big Brother” images, yet when I tried to find an image from the film for O’Brien holding up four fingers and grilling Winston Smith – – – probably THE most significant scene in the film – – – I couldn’t find ANY image of that scene except a tiny postage stamp size representation. Hmmm. Why is that?

I checked images on every single active search engine I could come up with . . . Google, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Bing, Luxxie, Qwant . . .hell, I even checked the Russian search engine Yandex. NOTHING more than a postage stamp size image – if any result at all.

I wonder why? What kind of skewed search algorithms are in place in today’s search engines to remove references to this blatant travesty of reality-rape?

Is it too close to today’s reality-denier/woke-mob-destruction of objective reality?  The radical left/progressives have managed to eliminate reality from their own minds and personality. They’re spreading their nothing-is-real ideology to so many of the population (mostly urban, and supposedly “educated”) throughout the United States and Europe.  Is it too close to matching the elite cabal’s call to eliminate logic, reason and debate of anything outside of their approved narrative?  Hmmmm . . .

I’ve included the ONLY image i could find as the feature image of this article. (Fair Use noted below, based on education, criticism and commentary of the movie and its theme within this article.)
